📸 How many pictures of slug buggies is too many?

I always wanted a yellow punch buggy when I was a kid. I kind of completely forgot they existed, but then we saw so many vintage ones in Mexico. Sometimes, I think I was born in the wrong era. I’ve always loved the sound of the 1920s or the 60s. But then again, they didn’t have lattes back then, so. Pros and cons.

I don’t know how Etsy became such a boy, but it’s really amusing. My whole life, I have known I would have a daughter. Over half of my life, I have thought I would also have a son who likes ballet and sparkles and unicorns. So, the day Etsy started stomping around like a dinosaur and talking nonstop about cars was a very perplexing one to me. I have really not tried to gender my children, apart from sharing my love of tea parties and twirling, so my question is where did his boy-ness come from? The mysteries of life. He’s growing up so fast, and most days when he’s with me, he no longer naps. So, when he does, I savor them because they have always been my favorite thing about parenting. They’re just so peaceful. I usually don’t sleep, but I often lie down nearby and read or write. So, here are some photos of what may be one of his last daytime naps I spend with him. He was so exhausted and overstimulated from the newness of Mexico that he just fell asleep on the car ride home from the cemetery and stayed asleep for a few lovely hours. And here it is 💙

Okay, in real life today we are home in St. Louis. We made it back juuuust before the storm and it feels SO good to be here. Those two weeks over the holidays felt like a lifetime. Maybe I’ll blog or do a podcast about it or something but for now… here are the first three days of the trip! Snowpea snapped some of these photos, and I think she did a great job. Also, before the trip Daniel and I were talking about how funny it is that when a movie takes you to Mexico, it puts on a yellow filter. Then as I was editing these photos, I found myself doing the SAME thing 🫣 well, these pictures aren’t even in Mexico yet, but for some reason the world looks different to me on the border/in the desert. So, here we are with a new filter for some, notably not the ones with my face (it makes my pale skin look purple, so no thanks). I truly did not have my Christmas act together this year, and I’m still trying not to feel bad about it. This was the first year snowpea really got into the whole Christmas spirit, which made me feel even worse. We were in a bit of a time crunch with finals and the big trip to Mexico, but I told her we’d see if there were any trees left at target. In the past we’ve gone to Christmas tree farms and I think I promised myself I’d never get a fake tree before I became a parent, so this felt like an act of desperation. There was only one tree left at target, and it was this cute, incredibly overpriced Charlie Brown tree. The person at the checkout laughed out loud when she saw the price and asked, “Damn girl, you sure you wanna pay that for this little thing?” I looked at snowpea, whose eyes were big with excitement and said yes. We went home and decorated, and I even put Christmas lights on the front of the house myself, which was a first and which I was quite proud of. It’s January, and I still haven’t finished buying all the presents (sorry). I have a card planned, and if you get something in the mail by February then heyyy we’ll be doing good. I guess I’m just trying to appreciate the little things this year. Surviving a semester with kids. Surviving their first trip to Mexico. Surviving in general. Phew, I know I celebrated the sparkle a few days ago, but the truth is 2024 ate me up and spit me out alive. In 2025, I want less drama, more friendship. Less struggle, more community. Less stress, more peace. The simple things, right?

2024 was the year I became a swiftie. I blamed snowpea at first, but she’s basically a mini-me, so I can really only blame myself. I think I avoided listening to her music my whole life until this point because I thought I was too sophisticated or too unique or whatever? But it turns out I like friendship bracelets and breakup songs just like everyone else. The truth is I never really knew I was a white girl until I married a Mexican man, and with him, I have been reminded of how basic I am every single day.

Okay, so these pictures are mostly snow days and lattes, but the truth is this week way maybe the hardest one of all of 2024. Etsy had a second febrile seizure, and this one was Traumatic with a big T. I think I’m far enough away from the event to say that now. Before I get any further, he’s fine. Having two febrile seizures is still within the range of normal, and oh my god it baffles me how resilient kids are. But out of the three now that our kids have had, this was the first one that I witnessed as it was happening and my goodness, I was terrified. I assumed he wouldn’t have another because snowpea never had a second, so I was really caught off guard. I kind of felt all along it was fated that we’d have at least one sick kid during finals week, but wow.

Anyways, these pictures don’t capture any of that, but they show the lighter things—the snow, the yoga studio, my musical taste, some cute daycare and haircut pics. the pretty latte art. Life can be so bittersweet, right? 🥲❄️

Our year from January-December. Our year in coffee, flowers, and bébés. Ireland, London, Chicago, Mexico, the countless trips to Carbondale, but mostly pictured here is our home in St. Louis. The kids and I started school and Daniel and I both started at WashU. We went camping for the first time, we got chickens, Daniel built a coop and a fence, and I (kind of) finished writing a novel. Etsy turned two, started potty training, stopped breastfeeding, and went from just babbling to having full on conversations. Snowpea’s scribbles turned into stick figures and letters, and she had the best four-year-old trolls party a girl could possibly wish for. They both got bunk beds and a mini jungle gym in their bedroom, and they love to throw dance parties and tea parties there. We did so much in the spring and summer—kids French classes, ballet, story time, play dates at the magic house and the botanical gardens, all of my doula clients whose stories I held close to me. But we let it all go in the fall when my classes began—everything except my yoga classes. So much has come out of this year. I think I got stuck in the mud a lot and fixated on the hard things (there were many). But this is how I want to remember it—as dirty chai, bouquets of wildflowers, the sea breeze, strawberry dresses, and confetti. As lavender farms and sunflower fields. As the golden hour of the eclipse. As dark chocolate, as daisy tattoos, as donuts on London sidewalks. As red nails, candid shots, letting go, and the slow dance of becoming who we are now.

This year for Halloween, I either wanted us all to dress up as the family from Encanto or the Addams Family. Snowpea said no to both ideas, she just wanted to be Bluey. I said no because she was Bluey last year, but she won. Last year, Daniel and I were Barbie and Ken. I had the pink jumpsuit as well as the cowgirl outfit—you know, the one with a teeny tiny bit of midriff showing and the big stars on the butt? Well, I wore the cowgirl Barbie suit for daytime Halloween in Kirkwood, and I got dirty looks from the other moms. I guess Barbie is still a controversial role model, but I thought that was the whole point? Anyways, I wasn’t going to go there again, so I decided to be just “mom”, and I think it went over better. I got the orange dog hat and tail from target, which was a ridiculous price for so little costume. And I picked up Daniel a blue “dad” dog onesie, and all together we made the whole Bluey family. It’s pictured in the tiny photos of my story and in family yoga on my feed. But the first photo here is actually from the weekend after Halloween when we went to Carbondale and snowpea dug out all my old costumes from a box. She’s Barnie here, I think the same Barnie my brother @signsoflife_chicago was when he was 2? She said absolutely no to changing before we went to the coffee shop, so here we all are. 2 months ago, but it still feels new.

I may be completely delulu, but I am convinced this will be the best year yet. At least, it feels much sweeter than 31 or 30. Oh my god, 30. That one was rough. Barely 3 weeks postpartum and ppd descending as I mourned the loss of my youth. So little sleep and why does why does no one tell you your hair can change color after having a babies? Mine got a few shades darker after each one. The lack of sleep made me feel scattered in a way I absolutely did not remember the first time I had a baby. Two is different from one, as were the circumstances of this one.

But this birthday was not that. I don’t feel new to STL anymore, and weirdly, I don’t feel old like I did at 30. I spent this one at home with one child with pink eye. But unlike at 30, we’re all in school now, so when the kids are home, it’s a sweet break, not overwhelming. I mainly celebrated 32 the day after my bday when my parents came to visit. We all went out for lattes and baby babyccinos @pipers.stl and a walk through @mobotgarden 🌿

This birthday was really special. It was also not like the day trip through Napa Valley like my 29th, but in some ways it was better? STL feels like home, and I feel like the luckiest girl that I get to be here with my babies, my studies, my yoga, and everyone I love 🤍

It’s not a big deal, and it’s partly just an aesthetic choice, but I think the selfie smile was lost sometime around the end of my second pregnancy. Sometime in October of this year, it came back. It was small at first, then a little awkward, taken at bad angles walking to class. I think around my birthday, it started to blossom, and you’ll see that next.

2024 has been, start to finish, an absolute telenovela. Someday I’ll write about it, but for now, you’ll just have to trust me on this. I kind of always thought when you grew up, life got boring. Well, maybe I was sheltered as a child, so that’s the only reality I could picture. So far, and especially this year, that’s not the case. As just one small example, we’re off to Mexico tomorrow.

Sometimes, it feels so tiring that so much has happened all at once. But the better part of me, feels so lucky to live this life of French literature and lattes, couples therapy and catastrophes, quesadillas and language barriers, and a whole lot of feels ✨

Daniel’s soufflés, my skeleton PSL💀, the kids growing (why does it go so fast? 😭). Ooh and both of them chasing chickens now and Iris watching as snowpea tries to give one a bath.

Daniel says his goal for 2025 is self-care, so I think I’ve rubbed off on him with all the yoga. My goal is to capture more of it all. I know I can’t hold on too tight because the future just becomes more daunting. I’ve been working on this project of transcribing my boxes full of childhood diaries, and I read in the first entry of one from when I was nine that the reason I was writing was to inspire others to write, too. I don’t know why that’s such a shocking revelation, but I think somewhere along the way the simplicity of it all got traded for some fantastical dreams of creating something moving and beautiful and life changing and blah blah blah you know I dream too big. But maybe it’s just that simple-capturing the mundane and hoping others will, too. Creating so others can create. Maybe?

I completely understand why it is exhausting to indulge all our wild fantasies, like building a greenhouse and starting a coffeeshop and writing novels and learning to grow our own food. Trust me, there are times when I don’t have the energy to dream big. And part of me feels like I never grew up because I just wander aimlessly through life, pursuing one passion and then the next. But I married someone who does the exact same thing as me, and sometimes we just spiral together. We’re good for each other (or bad for each other) in that way.

We did learn to camp and to start a fire and keep it alive for s’mores. Sometimes I’m proud of us. And sometimes I think we’re all just figuring it out as we go. I completely understand why it is exhausting to indulge all our wild fantasies, like building a greenhouse and starting a coffeeshop and writing novels and learning to grow our own food. Trust me, there are times when I don’t have the energy to dream big. And part of me feels like I never grew up because I just wander aimlessly through life, pursuing one passion and then the next. But I married someone who does the exact same thing as me, and sometimes we just spiral together. We’re good for each other (or bad for each other) in that way.

Okay, I understand like absolutely no one wants to look at pictures of apple orchards right now, and this is so out of season. But did I mention I’m finally done with finals and I’m finally catching up on sharing… basically everything that happened since I started the PhD 🫣 phew, it’s been busy.

Anyways, this was a fun, super Instagrammy day… that happened over 2 months ago. I promise I’ll start sharing more consistently soon 😘 👋

It’s still so wild to think Etsy is two already. Like wasn’t he just a tiny alien-looking thing swaddled up in my arms?

The passage of time is something I think about so often when it comes to parenting. I truly don’t understand it. Sometimes when you’re IN it, minutes can feel like hours and you’re like HOW am I going to make it to bedtime. And then you blink and they’re in college and you’re like where did the time go? 😿

There are days I wish I could forget.

I guess I never shared this one on my stories. Before I go on, Etsy’s okay. He was hospitalized just for an afternoon a few days before his birthday because he had a febrile seizure. Two out of two children had it, both around two years old. I can’t even describe how scary the first one was when we lived a 45-drive up the mountain and we thought we saw our snowpea’s life flash before our eyes. What we learned was that it’s not life-threatening, but I’ll admit, the fear of her having one again was a big reason why I took an extended maternity leave—so that she could avoid some of the exposure to all the sickness while she was in that age range that made her vulnerable to have another. It’s almost feels fated that Etsy would have one too right after snowpea went back to school. This was totally unexpected, but truly a less terrifying experience than our first. I guess that’s how it is with the second kid right? I think what was harder was sending him to daycare a few weeks later and wondering if I was doing the right thing. The sickness has been the worst part of the kids being in school, and my still aches every day when I drop them off. And when snowpea says, “mama, I miss when I was three and I got to stay home with you all day”—oof, that really gets to me 💔. But I also feel like they really love school and get a lot out of it? And it feels so selfish that I love being in school too, but I do. Plus, as of now (end of November), it’s been a few weeks since any of us have been sick. So, fingers crossed 🤞that part is getting easier

I know I can’t be the only one who uses ChatGPT to roast different parts of my internet presence just for fun, right? I laugh, but also, I’m like wow, it’s so right. I do come off as having no personality, right? And I do confuse people with my different careers and hobbies, huh? And can’t I just binge Netflix like a normal person instead of doing another certification (sadly, no)

I know Daniel got way more critical when he did his PhD, but it seemed to be directed outward more than in. So… is this normal? 😂 don’t answer that
